WHAT DOES 'SKIMO' MEAN?

Skimo, short for ski mountaineering, combines downhill skiing with uphill climbing to navigate mountainous terrain. Using lightweight gear and climbing skins, skimo enthusiasts ascend peaks and ski down from the summit. With growing interest in skimo racing, uphill skiing, and ski touring, the Red Lodge Skimo Club is here to build community, share knowledge, and foster a passion for these adventures in the Red Lodge area. Whether you’re new to the sport or experienced, our club welcomes all who seek the thrill of the climb and descent.

THE FACES BEHIND RED LODGE SKIMO

NICK STAYNER

I’ve been skiing and snowboarding the backcountry of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem for the last two and a half decades, and more recently found a love for skimo racing. I love all forms of ski touring, from mellow low-angle pow laps to challenging ski mountaineering objectives and multi-day traverses. I believe that shared physical experience in the outdoors can be a foundational part of a healthy community. This led me to start the Beartooth Velo group rides, and it’s my personal motivation for the Red Lodge Skimo Club. Hope to see you out at a dryland or on the snow!

BRIAN SWEET

For me, sliding on snow is the ultimate joyful experience. After decades of cross-country skiing, racing, and coaching, I stumbled on something new in the form of Skimo Racing. It’s so hard (in a good way) and to me, the ultimate test of a skier’s skills. Uphill skinning, downhill powder, boot-packing, and long traverses, it’s got it all. I am so pleased to be working to help foster an uphill and skimo community in Red Lodge and to help introduce more people to the satisfaction and joy of skiing uphill as well as downhill.

The Red Lodge Skimo Club wouldn't exist without the vision of Casey Gruber. He had a passion for all things skiing. It was his initial idea to start the club and he brought us together to make it happen. We will miss collaborating with him and the enthusiasm he brought to our planning sessions.
